DRUG ADDICTION IN TEENAGERS

Published on by Nicola Anne Collinette

As a mother, I am highly concerned at the increase in drug abuse amongst teenagers. This article explains the danger of drug addiction in teenagers and lists the signs and symptoms that you should look out for, should you suspect that your teenager is taking drugs.

Drug addiction is a huge problem all over the world and is becoming more prevalent amongst our teenage population. Teenagers usually begin smoking dagga with no intention of going onto harder drugs and in some cases, this is as far as it goes. However, the addiction seduces you into wanting more different stronger drugs and before long, you are caught in a battle which, if left unchecked, may have devastating and often fatal consequences.

Types of drugs

There are many drugs available on the market, the most common being alcohol, dagga, heroin, ecstasy, mandrax and cocaine. Unfortunately, legal and illegal drugs are readily available. The drugs can be swallowed, smoked, inhaled or injected. Drug abuse is a disease and results in a change of behaviour due to chemistry changes in the brain. Symptoms to look out for in your teenager’s behaviour are:

1. Your teenager becomes apathetic and disinterested in life.

2. Frequent problems at school and a drop in grades.

3. Change in appetite.

4. Lack of motivation.

5. Neglected appearance.

6. Red eyes.

7. Lack of coordination.

8. Becoming verbally and/or physically abusive towards others.

9. A new group of friends.

10. Lying.

11. Stealing.

12. A change in sleeping patterns.

13. Chemical smell on clothes (inhalant abuse).

If you child displays any of the above symptoms it does not necessarily mean they are addicted to or are using drugs. However, do not let the matter go unchecked as it is better to be safe than sorry. There is no greater loss than the loss of a child.

Treatment

Drugs cannot be given up through sheer willpower. There are amazing treatment centers which deal with short-term or long-term treatment as well as out-patient therapy, so if you discover your child is taking drugs, do not feel helpless. Seek professional help immediately.
